Why Mint Choc Chip Ice Cream Shouldn’t Be Green

Why Mint Choc Chip Ice Cream Shouldn’t Be Green

Why Mint Choc Chip Ice Cream Shouldn’t Be Green
Let’s talk mint chocolate chip ice cream. We all love it—minty, chocolatey goodness in every bite. But at Baboo Gelato, ours isn’t green. This can cause howls of dismay from our younger customers, so we thought we ought to address the green bogie man once and for all.

Keeping It Real
Okay, first off, real mint isn’t neon green. If you’ve ever seen mint leaves, they’re more of a gentle green, not the colour of a traffic light. Mint extracts, the stuff that actually flavours the ice cream, are usually clear or just slightly tinted. So, why are you being fed something that looks like it belongs in a cartoon?   At Baboo our pure peppermint oil comes from Summerdown Mint’s lush fields in Hampshire without a colouring or additive at all.

Health Stuff
Here’s the thing: those bright green colours are often from artificial dyes. Some studies say these dyes could be linked to hyperactivity in kids and other health issues. Even though agencies say they’re safe in small amounts, why add extra stuff to our food if we don’t have to? Especially when more people are looking for natural foods these days.

Flavour Focus
Colours can mess with our taste buds. When you see that green, you might expect a super intense, maybe even fake, mint flavour. Without the green dye, you get to enjoy the real balance between the mint and chocolate. No colour tricks—just pure, delicious flavour.

Eco-Friendly Vibes
Making artificial dyes isn’t always great for the planet. They often come from petroleum, which isn’t exactly renewable. Cutting out the green dye means a smaller environmental footprint.

Quality Over Gimmicks
We’re all about authentic, high-quality ingredients. By keeping the mint choc chip its natural colour, it highlights the craftsmanship and quality.  And it’s not just our mint in our mint choc that is amazing, we use rich organic milk from a nearby farm, and a stracciatella (ribbons) of Belgian chocolate.

Back to Basics
Mint chocolate chip ice cream wasn’t always green. The green dye thing started as a marketing trick in the mid-20th century.   We think green colouring for Mint Choc Chip belongs with cheese spread in a toothpaste tube as something best consigned to the past.

So, What’s the Verdict?
Sure, the green colour is iconic, but we think it is a marker of industrial ice cream.   By skipping the artificial dye, we get a more authentic, tasty, and healthier treat. It’s better for us, better for the environment, and honestly, it just feels right. Let’s enjoy mint chocolate chip ice cream the way it was meant to be—naturally delicious.
